Sea Ramanat launched The Green Giraffe (TGG) in 2010; her original vision was to have a boutique and online shop offering unique, high-quality, eco-friendly kids products.

Her connection to Freetown goes back to 2011. Her husband, then boyfriend, had been working in the region for some time and would regularly fly between Canada and West Africa; she would visit as often as she could.

Fast forward to 2017, they are married with 3 young kids and decided to relocate to Freetown to reduce their time apart.

What initially caught her attention was the vast array of fabrics and range of work done by local tailors and weavers in Freetown, which inspired her to find a way to integrate this with TGG.

She is a big advocate of fair trade and working with local artisans creating their products has been a natural evolution of TGG since being a socially responsible company has always been a part of their framework.

Their handmade products all began with joggers for kids and once they started making them, their inspirations have been endless!

They continually try new products and designs and once they find something they think works, they hone in and perfect it.

The artisans they work with are so resourceful and creative, items like sweaters donated from North America are unravelled and turned in to cloth that they use in some of their products.

These threads end up having a long life and they truly do go full circle!

Sea Ramanat is also the Co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer at Compassionate Paws International (CPI) which is a non-for-profit organization that funds and supports resource-limited animal welfare organizations worldwide.

She has always had a passion for animals, it is something that has been ingrained in her and passed down to her through her family.

With Sierra Leone having one of the highest stray dog populations in Africa and her seeing first-hand the conditions they have to endure, she knew that she had to act.

As a mother of 3, she feels that compassion for humans and animals comes hand-in-hand. She tries to lead by example ensuring that her children grow to have love and compassion for humans and animals alike.

At The Green Giraffe they believe in fair trade practices with a focus on empowering their local Freetown, Sierra Leone (West Africa) community towards social and economic self-sufficiency.

Their products not only provide the artisans a steady stream of work at above market wages in good working conditions, but they are also broadening their skillset by applying methods and techniques which are new to them while working on garments they are less familiar with.

Locally sourced materials and local artisans means that each product they sell provides a valuable contribution to the supply chain.

Their products are crafted by a team of talented weavers and tailors selected thorough equal opportunity practices.

What's more, most of their products are up-cycled from discarded clothing or scrap fabrics, making them sustainable and environmentally friendly!

Their mission is to continually grow & create influential goods, promoting compassion & respect while impacting the communities in which they work.

The Green Giraffe works alongside Compassionate Paws International by donating a portion of its proceeds in addition to providing handmade dog collars for the free roaming dogs in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Goods purchased from The Green Giraffe in its own small way makes a difference in communities throughout Sierra Leone.
