The collective of just over 200 women who create these bags consist of a supportive network whereby members have access to financial literacy training, sexual and reproductive health education and business support programs. Mmaa believe that these baskets truly have the power to change the lives of these women, their families and their broader communities.

And for every Mmaa bag or basket that is purchased, a girl or young woman will receive a reusable sanitary kit that lasts up to three years.

Dorcas, the founder of the Collectives in Ghana, brought together women in her community that were already weaving (it is passed down through the generations) and ensured that they were given fair pay and social programs to support them with financial literacy and reproductive health.Mmaa is more than beautiful baskets, it is also proud to be part of a movement to transform the lives of women and their families.

Mmaa is a collection of beautiful, handcrafted baskets and bags with a decidedly social mission aimed at empowering women and promoting African artisans. Mmaa is a brand that is for women by women. The straw is hand dyed with non toxic dyes then each piece is woven by hand and takes 2-3 days to make. Some are then finished with leather handles and/or fabric linings.

They believe that the ultimate luxury is knowing the provenance and meaning of these baskets. The artisans, part of a collective near the border of Ghana and Burkina Faso, take two to three days to hand weave each piece. Not only do the sustainable baskets reflect generations of traditional handicraft, they also provide income and financial independence for rural women in a context where paid employment is rare and most women engage in unpaid labour in the home or on family farms.
