Today we got to chat with the lovely Maria of Actina Jewelry based in beautiful Cyprus!
What inspired you to start your company?
When I was around 9 years old, my godfather gave me a jewelry making kit, as a present. That present was very important to me, as it made me realize that I loved jewelry and that I really enjoyed making things with my hands. Many years later, after finishing my studies in Architecture, I decided to take silversmith classes at a local studio. Since then I attended various jewelry courses in both Cyprus and Spain where I learned to work professionally with silver and gold. I feel that this studio is the place where my love for quality design and my passion for jewelry found a shelter.
What has been the most rewarding part of being an entrepreneur in this space?
The best part is when I receive photos and testimonials from people telling me how they wear and enjoy their jewelry. Seeing something I made with my hands being part of someone else's story its very rewarding!
What is a surprising lesson you learned along the way?
When I first started I tried to look like a big fancy jewelry studio, but along the way I realized that people love authenticity and transparency. People love to support and buy from real people!
Who do you turn to for motivation and inspiration?
My motivation comes for other dreamers. People that invested in themselves and in their dreams and succeed against all odds. My inspiration comes from everything that surrounds me. I feel a strong connection to geometry, symmetry and individuality. We are surrounded by magnificent shapes, forms, and people and if you apply attention and skill to that, you have endless inspiration.
What is a quote that you live by?
Be the change you want to see in the world by Mahatma Gandhi
Do you have any advice for people who want to start being more conscious consumers?
Yes, they should always have in mind that when they shop they vote. When we purchase something from a company, we are funding the company to continue doing what they're doing. We as consumers must fund good and sustainable practices so they can stay alive.
What are some small steps you do in your daily life to be more environmentally friendly?
Avoiding plastic and If it cannot be avoided trying first to re-use it and then recycle it. I also reduced my meat and dairy consumption.
How do you practice self-care?
I practice meditation every single day. Its the first thing I do when I open my eyes. I love it as it allows me to quiet my mind and think more clearly. I also practice yoga twice a week.
How do you want to be remembered?
As a kind, generous, creative soul.
