Today we get to meet Elle the incredible woman behind Newt by Elle. Newt by Elle is a luxurious skincare brand with all-natural ingredients made in Toronto. If the beautiful packaging and colors fo the products aren't enough to entice you their scents and Elle’s commitment to natural, ethically sourced and environmentally friendly ingredients definitely should. We are loving our oils and are so excited to get to know more about Elle and what has inspired her to create her brand and beautiful products.
What inspired you to start your company?
We wanted to create a clean beauty product that was affordable, eco-conscious but still luxurious. In my late 20’s I started to really notice a difference in the texture of my skin, along with sun damage and issues of hyper-pigmentation. There were various treatments available, but they seemed to be fairly invasive + costly. This is when our first stages of research began. Marula is one of the primary oils to help correct hyper-pigmentation and nourish damaged skin, because it is rich in omega fatty acids and antioxidants. We started creating formulas using organic marula as our carrier oil, and the results were significant. Our testing, designing, creating, planning, developing stages began and that is how Newt by elle was formed. Throughout the development of Newt we have ensured to work closely with suppliers who provide resources that are ethically and environmentally sustainable and sourced, along with designing packaging that is low-waste, compostable, biodegradable, or recyclable.
What has been the most rewarding part of being an entrepreneur in this space?
The most rewarding part of being an entrepreneur in this space is seeing the relationship between our product and those using it. It is so important to know what you are applying on your skin, and most importantly our faces. We are transparent with our ingredients, and ensure we are delivering only the highest quality of organic natural ingredients to our consumers. When we hear that a client feels more confident in their own skin because of our product, or that it has become a special part of their morning selfcare routine, this is what makes everything all worth it. I remember when I first felt confident enough with my skin to not wear makeup outside of my house, and this was a really nice feeling that I am so thankful to be able to share with others.
What is a surprising lesson you learned along the way?
A lesson and skill I have learned along the way (because I tended to want things to happen quickly), is patience. It is important for things to happen slowly, for products to be made slowly, for research to be done with extreme care to ensure a process or element is not overlooked.
Who do you turn to for motivation and inspiration?
For motivation and inspiration, I always turn to other female entrepreneurs in our community. We are all in different stages of having our own business and the lessons, advice, and struggles that we can all share together really help when trying to overcome the tougher days. My partner and I run every element of Newt by Elle together, and depend on each other to constantly bounce fresh ideas around which helps to stay inspired.
What is a quote that you live by?
When we come across some of the tougher days that you do as an entrepreneur, my partner will stop and ask me, “Elle, are you still having fun?”. This is something I have learned to live by, money will come and go, but time will not. We try and have fun with every aspect of the business, or at the least learn something new.
Do you have any advice for people who want to start being more conscious consumers?
For consumers who are interested in becoming more conscious of what products they are purchasing, from ingredients to packaging, I would tell them it may seem small but it makes a difference. It is important to know the story and knowledge behind where your purchases are coming from, the process in which they are made, and who is making them. When we begin to make this conscious effort to shop sustainably, your skin with thank you, your environment will thank you, your kids + community will thank you.
What are some small steps you do in your daily life to be more environmentally friendly?
There are many small changes that can be made to your daily routine that will benefit our environment + you!
- Buy products that are organic, fair-trade, sustainably sourced etc.
- Take reusable bags when shopping
- Buy products with no packaging or at least environmentally conscious packaging
- Support your local community of makers and farmers
- Re-fill your existing skincare bottles or food containers when applicable
How do you practice self-care?
I practice self-care by learning to embrace and love the changes that are happening to my body throughout different stages of my life (this is ongoing). On the daily I try to practice self-care by taking time for myself when needed which is often, and knowing what exactly is in the food I am consuming, and the ingredients which are in the products I am putting on my skin.
For making ya laugh.
