Meet Brittany, Founder of A MILLION ELEPHANTS

Meet Brittany, the founder of A MILLION ELEPHANTS.

Brittany lives in a small town in Ontario, Canada. Growing up in a mixed family with a Laotian father, she has always had a desire to connect with her cultural roots. She had her first visit to Laos in January 2017 when she was 26 years old and immediately felt a connection with the people and environment. One evening at a night market in Luang Prabang, she met a child selling handicrafts made from war shrapnel. This single encounter with a child the same age as her own son, sparked and inspired the idea behind A MILLION ELEPHANTS.

What inspired you to start your company?

The creative resilience of Lao artisans and the desire to share my Lao culture.

What has been the most rewarding part of being an entrepreneur in this space?

Knowing that A Million Elephants is inspiring others, whether it be a young women with a dream to start her own business or someone in the Lao community wanting to also share their cultural heritage.

What is a surprising lesson you learned along the way?

Sometimes people believe in you more than yourself and not to doubt that people really do want to help and see you succeed so let them!

Who do you turn to for motivation and inspiration?

My children- they are the biggest reminder of why I need to keep going when things get tough. I am also lucky enough to be surrounded by a group of girlfriends who are all female entrepreneurs in totally different spaces. This is great because we can relate to struggles but also bring a fresh perspective when we get stuck in our own space.

What is a quote that you live by?

What you think you become, what you feel you attract, what you imagine you create.

Do you have any advice for people who want to start being more conscious consumers?

Start asking questions about what you buy. The more you know, the more you realize if you really want or need that product.

What are some small steps you do in your daily life to be more environmentally friendly?

Small steps that are EASY are key, especially when you are busy with young children. Using reusable water bottles, reusable beeswax sandwich bags/ wraps, local bar soaps and being mindful to purchase products with minimal packaging.

How do you practice self-care?

Yoga, meditation stories at night, reading fiction novels, baths and facials.

How do you want to be remembered?

Passionate and doing what feels right in your heart, even if it takes your outside of your comfort zone.
