This week we get to know Amandla from Bartholomew Sisters, handmade vegan skincare products for the hair, face, and body with a West African twist
What inspired you to start your company?
I got started two years ago as I was looking to eliminate harsh products for my daily regimen. Once I got started I began to get requests from friends and family who were looking for the same. They encouraged me to make the leap into the business.
What has been the most rewarding part of being an entrepreneur in this space?
Meeting new people: customers and other small business owners. It's always interesting hearing people's stories and knowing what brought them my way! It's a nice connection to have.
What is a surprising lesson you learned along the way?
If you have an idea or a goal - just start. You can correct things along the way. Not all the ideas need to be fleshed out since things are bound to be changed. Just start!
Who do you turn to for motivation and inspiration?
Other small female business owners - just seeing the breadth of creation is enough to motivate me. Getting a chance to talk with them, however brief, and understanding why they started and how they would like to grow is inspiring to me.
What is a quote that you live by?
Stick to your vision - Maestro
Do you have any advice for people who want to start being more conscious consumers?
If the first item or product you try doesn't work for you - don't give up. Try again! Engage and learn from others who are also new to the scene and those who are "veterans". There's always more to experience and learn.
What are some small steps you do in your daily life to be more environmentally friendly?
1) Bringing my reusable straw and cup everywhere I go.
2) Have a reusable bag tucked into my purse.
3) Using glass containers for food when possible
How do you practice self-care?
Remembering to take downtime and not be ashamed of it. Working for myself I always have ideas on the go, but it's important to have that time to reset my mind and body. Sometimes it's in the form of mini vacation, a massage, getting acupuncture or just listening to a good audio book.
How do you want to be remembered?
As a kind and inspirational influence to those I've met.
What’s your favorite book of all time?
Do Over by J.Acuff
